    Ferdinando Ongania was a
    Venetian publisher and bookseller
    (1842-1911) who is best known for publishing the monumental edition,
    Basilica San Marco
    .
    Ongania published more than 170 books, mainly about Venice.
    He was particularly significant for using the latest photographic techniques to create facsimile editions and reproductions of great Venetian artworks.
    In particular, his heliographic prints
    were remarkable for their printing clarity. This souvenir album is especially rare and this is a Near Fine copy. 12 1/2" x 9". 40 plates with tissue guards. Cord binding. Two 1/4" tears along foredge overlap otherwise the wrap is Fine. Gold stamped lettering is Fine. The tip-on card on front wrap is Fine. The Ongania imprint is on the front with the copyright imprint on the back. Plates are Fine with no missing tissue guards. First page is an index of plates and the last page an ad for the Ongania bookshop. There are no copies listed in the world library system.
