    Virginia Bateman
    , was a distinguished member of the profession, as were her elder sister, the actress
    Viola Compton
    , and her uncles and aunts. Her grandfather was the 19th-century theatrical luminary
    Henry Compton
    .  Author,
    Compton Mackenzie
    was her elder brother.
